"A Retrospective Look at
the Mayoralty of Ivan Allen Jr."
Global Learning Center, Amphitheatre #236
The nation's cities faced a particularly difficult time
during the 1960s.
Riots exploded in Newark, Detroit, LA and elsewhere
across the country.
Although having many race related issues of its own, Atlanta
remained
relatively free of violence. Much of this calm is attributed
to the work of
Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. who came to realize that it was time
for the South to
change. As the only southern elected official to support
the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, Allen stands out as a progressive, realistic,
and peaceful voice
during a turbulent period. With his recent death, it is
a fitting moment to
analyze his legacy for the city and nation. There is still
an urban crisis
in America today and still racial problems to resolve. Looking
at the 1960s
era and a man who tried to be a unifier for the city's people
helps us
understand the role of effective leadership in Atlanta's
history.
